Repeat offender...

According to the latest edition of the Chapleau Express, Rose Bertrand may have been in conflict of interest more than once in the past.  All of the alleged infractions relate to giving perks to family members, hence the conflicts of interest.  It is also interesting to note that more and more of the space in the local newspaper is being devoted to this ongoing story.  Clearly, the public is quite taken by this level of apparent corruption in our quiet little town.  It's big news.  While Larry Lacroix's letter reveals what many of us suspected, it does nothing to satisfy our collective demand for justice.  Nor was that Mr. Lacroix's intention.  I don't even think the Mayor can make this all go away, at this point in time.  We need something (an explanation, an apology, something!) from Rose Bertrand herself.  She has had several weeks to dwell on this.  I could use some colourful metaphors to illustrate the urgency by which we need a response.  I'll leave them to your imagination.  This issue will not go away.  At the very least, for the people that voted and put their faith in her, Rose Bertrand owes some answers and they are very long overdue.

  1. The Mayors Conflict Is it true or just a red herring? Something doesn't add up here.

  2. Tonight's Council meeting is at 7:30 PM. We must all attend and demand an explanation to our many questions as well as ask as to what Council intends to do about this. Since the majority of Council won't come to us, well then we'll just have to go to them! We must show our that we are serious and one individual attending does not send that message therefore lets ALL attend tonight's meeting.

  3. I read with some reservation Mr. Lacroixs Letter to the Editor. Lacroix must understand that their is an unspoken rule that once a decision is voted on and approved by the majority, then he should accept that decision even if it was not what he wanted. This is a rule in any process. To speak negatively about any opposistion after the vote, or to undermine the decision only in any way is counter productive to to the process. I would have thouoght that his ghost writer would have picked up on this.

  4. I don't always have access to a computer, so I welcome the printing of Council minutes in the newspaper. I read Larry's letter and then lo and behold on Page 10--he is guilty of exactly what he was saying in his letter. Resolution 3053 replacing resolution 1-13 where approval was received for Mrs. Bertrand to attend a conference. Lacrox moved and the replacement candidate 2nd it. I can only assume that the previous candiate was in agreement with this and this is not a bullying tactic.

  5. Thanks for sharing, I totally missed that. Heres a good one. If Councilor Lacroix can have resolutions disolved as easily as that, why can't the rest of council do the same?

  9. Mr X I am sorry for not typing what I had to say on your blog but I put it on Kimmo's site so I refer you to it. Go read it. And the same goes for you too. I was there at the meeting tonight where were you? I talk the talk but I also walk the walk.:)

  10. Sorry for not being there Dennis. Maybe when my 6 month-old baby (last of three children) is a little bit older, I'll have time to go out in the field. Not all of us are lazy armchair activists, you know. The reason I don't participate in things right now as much as I would like to is because I cannot, not because I do not want to. As you and Kimmo both have children (a good bit older than mine, I'll bet), I'm sure you can understand the kind of commitment that a family demands. I am participating in my own way by keeping this site up and helping people to get the word out. At this point in my life, that's all I can give. I hope it's enough for you all.

  11. What I don't understand is why a mayor and other councillors are unable to tell someone when they are in conflict of interest. What is the reasoning behind that?

  12. ^ In accordance with the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, it is up to each member to control their own actions. CAO's and mayor should not be making these decisions for a councillor.
Oh, also, the Head of Council only has 6 weeks to request an official review of a councillors actions for this offence. How long has it been now?
