Gone Fishin'...or maybe not...
It appears that the annual Fishing Derby has been cancelled for 2011. This is NOT a good sign. While the loss of the Rotary Trade Show for a year was blamed on the recession, I wonder why they would suddenly cancel the ice fishing derby. Popular understanding has it that this was one of the more popular events on our town's calendar, or so we were led to believe. The committee claims it is because of factors beyond their control. It would be nice to have some clarification on this. While the Trade Show has returned, we all know what happened when they decided to take a break from the Nature Festival. Will the Fish Derby join this list of events that are accompanied by the letters R.I.P.? Let's hope not, as our town desperately needs these events for our very survival.

I asked the same question on my Blog site. It has been answered there if you are interested in reading it.
ReplyDeleteCheers,

Thanks for the info, Kimmo.
ReplyDeleteIf there is a lack of volunteers as stated, why not put the feelers out well in advance of the event to try to get new volunteers? After Rolph Fuchs retired from soccer, guess what? A new crop of volunteers stepped in (as requested beforehand) and there was soccer this summer as there has been for many years before. Things may not go as smoothly the first year or so, but at least there is a continuation and the event takes place. But how can the void be filled if no one knows about it? Just my two cents on the issue.
It looks like you might be interested in volunteering. So step right and go get them!
ReplyDeleteI certainly would if I had the time. Having a full time job and three children will do that. How's your spare time?
ReplyDeleteI still think they should have informed the general public of their plight (if the story is indeed true) instead of just outright pulling the plug. Without actual information from the organizing committee, all we can do is speculate.
hello, does this thing still work, what with the up-coming elections and all.
